What is a Trauma Response?
A trauma response is your nervous system’s automatic reaction to a real or perceived threat.
These responses are shaped by your lived experiences, early environment, and even ancestral memory.
When your system senses danger, it moves into fight, flight, freeze, or fawn mode — protective patterns designed to keep you safe, even if they’re no longer serving you.
The Four F's: Survival in Motion
Here’s how each trauma response might look in real life:
Fight
You get angry, confrontational, reactive. You push back — hard.
“If I stay strong, they can’t hurt me.”Flight
You run, avoid, escape into work, travel, overthinking, or substances.
“If I keep moving, I won’t feel the pain.”Freeze
You shut down. You go numb. Time blurs. Your body disappears.
“If I disappear, I’ll survive.”Fawn
You people-please, appease, and make yourself small to avoid conflict.
“If I’m good, they won’t leave or explode.”
Why Do These Patterns Repeat?
Your nervous system stores memory not just in your brain — but in your body.
So even when the original threat is long gone, the imprint remains.
Until we begin to process, unwind, and integrate these responses, we stay stuck in a loop.
Not because we’re broken — but because our system is still trying to protect us.
